There is no doubt that Addis Ababa is
one of the fastest growing cities in the world, with
annual urban growth of 3.40% and ranked 31st just behind
Las Vegas, USA according to citymayors.com.
With more expatriates returning to the country to live
and work, construction of both office buildings and
residences have skyrocketed and has turned Addis Ababa
in one of the liveliest cities in East Africa rivaling
even Nairobi and Kampala. Based on figures from the
Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA) published
in 2008, Addis Ababa has an estimated total population
of 3,147,000, with an estimated area of 530.14 square
kilometers (204.69 sq mi), and an estimated density
of 5,936.2 inhabitants per square kilometer or 15,375
/sq mile. Addis Ababa albeit still small size-wise in
comparison to the top 5 urban centers of Africa it is
highly densely populated and thus has a tremendous housing
problem for its inhabitants. Due to an influx of people
coming from the countryside as well as high birthrates,
the city has become overcrowded and is forced to sustain
increased refuse and pollution. Read
